The Mentorship Program is a 45+ year tradition and is recognized for its unique collaboration with over 200 volunteer mentors per year that provide project-based opportunities for students. The program is designed for students with little or no previous experience and relies on NCSSM instructors to provide the support and instruction necessary for high school students to navigate the experience with confidence, professionalism, and self-reliance.
There are three (3) distinct Mentorship tracks to which students can apply: Mentorship 1 (M1, summer), Mentorship 2 (M2, senior year), or M3 (summer + senior year).
The Summer Research & Innovation Program (SRIP) courses are faculty-led, summer intensive opportunities in a wide variety of fields. These are open to rising NCSSM seniors in both the residential and online programs and offered at no cost to students.
NCSSM Durham Mentorship partners primarily focus on academic research projects with mentors at Duke University, NC Central University, NC State University, UNC-Chapel Hill and other partnering organizations. The process of securing a mentor is administered by the Director of Mentorship and Research.
NCSSM Morganton Mentorship partners include research and problem-based experience with university, industry and community partners, as well as nationally recognized certification programs. Students apply to predetermined Mentorship opportunities with identified partners who are chosen in advance.
